An Account of Two Passages Over the Atlantic in the Years 1805 and 1806 With. A Comparative View of the Temperature, Salubrity, and Sailing Qualities of the North and South Atlantic Oceans
In the year 1805, I embarked on a voyage from England to the West Indies, in the ship "Mentor", Captain Smith. We sailed from Portsmouth on the 1st of May, and arrived at Barbados on the 1st of June. The passage was a very favourable one, and we experienced no bad weather. The temperature was moderate, and the winds were generally fair. We had a few calms, but they were of short duration. The crew were healthy, and no one died during the voyage.

In the year 1806, I returned to England from the West Indies, in the ship "Hope", Captain Jones. We sailed from Barbados on the 1st of July, and arrived at Portsmouth on the 1st of August. This passage was also a favourable one, but we experienced more bad weather than we did on the outward voyage. The temperature was higher, and the winds were more variable. We had several gales of wind, but they were not of long duration. The crew were healthy, and no one died during the voyage.
I have given this brief account of two passages over the Atlantic, in order to compare the temperature, salubrity, and sailing qualities of the North and South Atlantic Oceans. In my opinion, the North Atlantic is a more agreeable and healthy sea than the South Atlantic. The temperature is more moderate, and the winds are more regular. The South Atlantic is more subject to storms, and the temperature is more variable. The crew of a ship sailing in the South Atlantic are more likely to suffer from scurvy and other diseases than the crew of a ship sailing in the North Atlantic.
I have also found that the sailing qualities of the North Atlantic are superior to those of the South Atlantic. The winds are more favourable, and the currents are less strong. A ship can make a quicker passage from England to the West Indies in the North Atlantic than in the South Atlantic. I have also found that the North Atlantic is a more beautiful sea than the South Atlantic. The water is clearer, and the islands are more picturesque. I prefer to sail in the North Atlantic than in the South Atlantic, and I recommend it to all who are about to undertake a voyage across the Atlantic.
Comparative View of the Temperature, Salubrity, and Sailing Qualities of the North and South Atlantic Oceans
North Atlantic | South Atlantic | |
---|---|---|
Temperature | More moderate | More variable |
Salubrity | More healthy | Less healthy |
Sailing qualities | Superior | Inferior |
I hope that this article has been helpful to you in understanding the differences between the North and South Atlantic Oceans. I encourage you to do your own research on this topic so that you can make an informed decision about which ocean you would like to sail in.
Thank you for reading!
Sincerely,
John Smith
