Jimmy Carter's autobiography, Believer, is a sweeping account of his forty-year career in politics. From his early days as a peanut farmer in Georgia to his presidency and his subsequent work as a humanitarian, Carter offers a candid and introspective look at his life and work.
Early Life and Career
Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924. He grew up on a peanut farm and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology. After graduating, he served in the Navy and then returned to Georgia to work on the family farm.
In 1962, Carter was elected to the Georgia Senate. He served two terms before being elected governor in 1970. As governor, Carter implemented a number of progressive reforms, including the creation of a state income tax and the establishment of a state lottery.
The Presidency
In 1976, Carter was elected president of the United States. He defeated incumbent Gerald Ford in a close and hard-fought election.
As president, Carter faced a number of challenges, including the energy crisis, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He also oversaw the signing of the Camp David Accords, which brought peace between Israel and Egypt.
Carter's presidency was often overshadowed by the Iran hostage crisis, which began in 1979 when Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage. The hostages were held for 444 days, and their release was one of the most important events of Carter's presidency.
Carter left office in 1981 with a low approval rating. However, he has since regained much of his popularity, and he is now considered one of the most successful former presidents in history.
Post-Presidency
After leaving office, Carter founded the Carter Center, a non-profit organization that works to promote democracy, human rights, and peace. He has also written a number of books, including his autobiography, Believer.
Carter has been a vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy, and he has often spoken out against the use of military force. He has also been a strong advocate for human rights, and he has worked to promote democracy in countries around the world.
In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to promote peace and democracy. He is the only U.S. president to have won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Legacy
Jimmy Carter is a complex and controversial figure. He has been praised for his intelligence, his compassion, and his commitment to peace. However, he has also been criticized for his idealism and his lack of experience in foreign policy.
Despite the criticism, Carter remains a highly respected figure in the United States and around the world. He is a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights. His work has made a significant difference in the lives of millions of people around the world.
Believer is a fascinating and insightful account of Jimmy Carter's life and work. It is a must-read for anyone interested in American politics, history, or the life of one of the most influential presidents in history.
