In 1771, Ledyard entered Dartmouth College, but he soon left to join the Continental Army. He served in the Revolutionary War for three years, and he was present at the Battle of Saratoga. After the war, Ledyard returned to Dartmouth and graduated in 1782.

Ledyard's travels began in 1783, when he sailed to Europe. He spent the next four years traveling through France, Italy, and Russia. In 1787, he joined the crew of the ship Columbia, which was commanded by Captain Robert Gray. The Columbia sailed around the world, and Ledyard became the first American to visit the northwest coast of North America.

In 1788, Ledyard left the Columbia and traveled overland to Siberia. He crossed the Bering Strait and entered Russia. He then traveled across Siberia to Yakutsk, where he met with Russian officials. Ledyard's goal was to reach the Pacific Ocean, but he was turned back by the Russian government.

Ledyard returned to England in 1789, and he published an account of his travels. He also made plans for a new expedition to Africa. In 1791, Ledyard set out for Cairo, but he died of dysentery in 1792.
