Early Life and Career

Conrad Moffat Black was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on August 25, 1944. His father, George Montegu Black, was a successful businessman and politician. His mother, Florence Rita (née Johnson),was a homemaker. Black attended Upper Canada College in Toronto and then studied history at the University of Toronto.

After graduating from university, Black began his career in journalism as a reporter for The Gazette in Montreal. He later moved to Toronto and worked for The Globe and Mail. In 1971, Black co-founded The Financial Post, a business newspaper.

Hollinger International

In 1985, Black acquired Hollinger Inc., a Canadian newspaper company. He renamed the company Hollinger International and began acquiring newspapers in the United States and the United Kingdom. By the early 2000s, Hollinger International owned more than 100 newspapers, including The Daily Telegraph, The Chicago Sun-Times, and The Jerusalem Post.

Black was a controversial figure during his time as chairman and CEO of Hollinger International. He was criticized for his lavish lifestyle and for his close ties to politicians. He was also accused of using his newspapers to promote his own interests.

Fraud and Obstruction of Justice

In 2005, Black was charged with fraud and obstruction of justice related to his dealings at Hollinger International. He was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to six and a half years in prison. He served three years in prison before being released in 2010.

Black maintains that he was wrongly convicted and that the charges against him were politically motivated. He has written a number of books about his experience, including A Matter of Principle, in which he argues that he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

Later Life

Since his release from prison, Black has continued to write and speak out on a variety of issues. He is a regular contributor to The National Post, a Canadian newspaper. He has also written a number of books, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Champion of Freedom (2012) and Richard M. Nixon: A Life in Full (2015).

Black remains a controversial figure, but he is also a fascinating one. He is a brilliant businessman and author who has lived a life full of drama and intrigue.
