About the Author
Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986) was an English novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He is best known for his Berlin Stories, which were adapted into the Academy Award-winning film Cabaret (1972). Isherwood also wrote several other novels, including A Single Man (1964) and My Guru and His Disciple (1980).
Isherwood was born in Cheshire, England, in 1904. He studied at Cambridge University, where he met W.H. Auden, who became his lifelong friend and collaborator. In 1929, Isherwood moved to Berlin, where he lived for several years. He was drawn to the city's vibrant nightlife and artistic scene, but he was also aware of the growing threat of Nazism.
In 1933, Isherwood left Berlin and moved to the United States. He became a U.S. citizen in 1946. Isherwood continued to write throughout his life, and he published several more novels, plays, and screenplays. He died in Santa Monica, California, in 1986.
