John B. Atkinson was born in 1833 in Waterford, Maine. He was the son of a farmer and grew up in a small town. Atkinson was a bright and ambitious young man, and he attended college for two years before deciding to enlist in the Union Army in 1861. He was assigned to the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment and served for four years, fighting in some of the bloodiest battles of the war, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

Atkinson was a prolific writer, and he kept a journal throughout his time in the army. His journal entries provide a unique and insightful first-hand account of the conflict from the perspective of a New Englander who served in the Union Army. Atkinson's journal entries offer a detailed and often poignant look at the daily life of a soldier during the war, as well as his thoughts and feelings about the conflict.

Atkinson was wounded several times during the war, and he was eventually discharged from the army in 1865. He returned home to Maine, where he married and started a family. Atkinson died in 1901, at the age of 68. His journal was passed down to his family, and it is now housed at the Maine State Library.
