The Founding of Rome
According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus, twin brothers who were raised by a wolf. The brothers eventually quarrelled, and Romulus killed Remus. He then became the first king of Rome.
The early years of Rome were marked by constant warfare. The Romans fought against neighboring tribes and against each other. But over time, Rome began to grow in power and influence.
The Roman Republic
In 509 BC, the Romans overthrew their king and established a republic. A republic is a form of government in which power is held by the people. The Roman Republic was ruled by a senate, which was made up of wealthy and powerful citizens.
The Roman Republic was a time of great expansion. The Romans conquered new territories in Italy, Greece, and North Africa. They also developed a strong navy, which allowed them to control the Mediterranean Sea.
The Roman Empire
In 27 BC, the Roman Republic came to an end when Octavian, also known as Augustus, became the first emperor of Rome. The Roman Empire was a period of great prosperity and peace. The Romans built roads, bridges, and aqueducts. They also developed a system of laws that is still used today.
The Roman Empire reached its peak under the emperor Trajan. Trajan's empire stretched from Britain to the Middle East. But after Trajan's death, the empire began to decline.
The Fall of the Roman Empire
The Roman Empire began to decline in the 3rd century AD. The empire was plagued by political instability, economic problems, and military defeats. In 476 AD, the last Roman emperor was overthrown by a Germanic tribe.
The Legacy of Ancient Rome
The Roman Empire may have fallen, but its legacy lives on. The Romans made many important contributions to Western civilization, including:
- A system of laws that is still used today
- A system of roads and bridges that connected the empire
- A system of aqueducts that brought water to cities
- A rich culture that produced great art, literature, and philosophy
The Roman Empire was one of the most important civilizations in history. Its legacy continues to shape our world today.
