What is Birdshot Retinochoroidopathy?

Birdshot retinochoroidopathy (BRC) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disease that affects the eyes. It is characterized by the presence of small, round, white spots in the retina and choroid, which are the layers of tissue that line the back of the eye. BRC is often associated with uveitis, which is inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye.

Causes

The exact cause of BRC is unknown, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disease, in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. It is believed that BRC is triggered by an environmental factor, such as an infection or virus, in individuals who are genetically predisposed to the disease.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of BRC include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Floaters
  • Light sensitivity
  • Pain in the eyes
  • Redness of the eyes

BRC can also lead to more serious complications, such as:

  • Macular edema
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Vision loss

Diagnosis

BRC is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. The doctor will examine the eyes with an ophthalmoscope to look for the characteristic white spots in the retina and choroid. The doctor may also order blood tests and imaging tests, such as an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan, to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

There is no cure for BRC, but treatment can help to control the inflammation and prevent vision loss. Treatment options include:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Immunosuppressive drugs
  • Biologic therapies

The doctor will tailor the treatment plan to the individual patient's needs and the severity of the disease.

Prognosis

The prognosis for BRC varies depending on the severity of the disease. With early diagnosis and treatment, most people with BRC can maintain good vision. However, some people with BRC may experience vision loss, especially if the disease is not treated promptly.
