The Early Days
The earliest evidence of confectionery production in Yorkshire dates back to the 13th century. At this time, gingerbread was a popular treat, made from a simple mixture of flour, honey, and spices. Gingerbread was often used to make religious figures and other decorative items, and it was a common sight at fairs and festivals.
In the 16th century, sugar became more widely available in England, and this led to a boom in the confectionery industry. Yorkshire was at the forefront of this boom, and a number of new confectionery companies were established in the county. These companies produced a wide range of sweets, including sugarplums, comfits, and marchpanes.
The 19th Century
The 19th century was a golden age for the Yorkshire confectionery industry. A number of new factories were built in the county, and production of sweets increased dramatically. This was due in part to the development of new technologies, such as the steam engine and the sugar beet.
One of the most famous Yorkshire confectionery companies of the 19th century was Rowntree's. Founded in 1829, Rowntree's was a pioneer in the development of new sweets. In 1862, the company introduced the Fruit Pastille, which was one of the first commercially successful fruit-flavored sweets.
Another famous Yorkshire confectionery company of the 19th century was Terry's. Founded in 1827, Terry's was best known for its chocolate oranges. The Terry's Chocolate Orange was invented in 1932, and it quickly became one of the most popular sweets in the world.
The 20th Century
The 20th century saw the Yorkshire confectionery industry continue to grow and prosper. New companies were established, and new sweets were developed. One of the most popular sweets of the 20th century was the liquorice allsort. Liquorice allsorts were invented in 1899 by George Basset, a confectioner from Sheffield.
Another popular sweet of the 20th century was the chocolate eclair. Chocolate eclairs were invented in 1912 by John Cadbury, the son of the founder of Cadbury's chocolate company.
The 21st Century
The 21st century has seen the Yorkshire confectionery industry continue to evolve. New technologies have been developed, and new sweets have been created. However, some things have remained the same. The Yorkshire confectionery industry is still a major part of the county's economy, and it continues to produce some of the world's most beloved sweets.
